Website Advice
Welcome to our website help section, offering advice aimed at all website owners. In the field we cover, escaping technical detail is not always possible but our articles are intended to be read by those with varying experience.
As with our website reports, the objective is to translate often cryptic information and a few myths into real world advice. We are not seeking to be controversial or rely on opinion, simply to arm readers with usable, practical ideas.
The themes may stray ocassionally will be of use to all those managing websites, or building them for others. Even for personal sites you will find helpful tips, although our focus is on business websites and creating new business.
Working With The Web
Opportunities abound to succeed on the web, an idea born from collaboration and communication. For commercial needs you also need to work with other sites and with search engines.
In the UK and much of the world this means Google, who control 88% of UK search and 91% of all search based buying decisions. In our view this is likely to continue and their grip on the web extend in other ways.
Not that this is a problem, we monitor Google closely, the staff we have contact with tend to be decent people who care about their work and the web. They also have a business to run but do wish to support useful websites.
Website Location
Neither is working with Google always complex, they have many aids to help website owners and themselves, such as the geo-location tool shown in the video above. Search results are localised in most cases, search engines need to know the region your site targets.
They take a logical view on geographical location, with the phyical location of the server your site uses a core factor, along with the domain. If you use a generic domain such as .com, server location is the main signal. Even for a local domain such as .co.uk, using a UK host may still be the ideal option.
We try to keep you informed of all Google's core needs but our articles are not limited to this. However effective search engines are, they may not be the focus of your business plan and for every business, a website needs to work for visitors once they find your site.
We hope our website help articles are useful to you and your business. If you have specific questions regarding your website, by all means contact us.
